Season Overview

After an off-season dominated by Dany Heatley's trade request, the forward was finally shipped to the San Jose Sharks on the opening day of training camp for a pair of forwards: Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo. But that acrimony couldn't spoil what would turn out to be an uplifting return to the post-season for the Senators, although it took some doing to get there. Injuries ravaged the team's lineup in December, with Ottawa's entire first line of Michalek, Jason Spezza and captain Daniel Alfredsson sidelined at one point.

The Senators were mired in a five-game losing streak in January and in danger of maintaining their hold on their playoff position, when goaltender Mike Brodeur was summoned from the Binghamton Senators (AHL) on an emergency basis when both Pascal Leclaire and Brian Elliott were unavailable to play. Brodeur recorded a pair of victories in New York and Montreal, igniting the Senators to a club-record 11-game winning streak that would propel them back into the post-season.

On April 6, 2010, in Sunrise, Fla., Alfredsson played his 1,000th career NHL game in a 5-2 victory over the Panthers, making him the first Senator to reach that milestone. Four nights later, the Senators celebrated that occasion in their regular-season home finale against the Buffalo Sabres, which included an emotional pre-game tribute to the team's beloved captain. The Senators again drew the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round of the playoffs and fell behind 3-1 in the opening-round series. But Ottawa wouldn't die easily, with Matt Carkner's goal in triple overtime ending the longest game in Senators history and sending the series back to Ottawa, where the Penguins would wrap it up with an overtime triumph.
